22. Self-portrait with Dylan's hair
ROLL 446 | FRAME 30
Martha, Brooklyn, June 2023.
This week I wrapped up both my photobook class at Parsons and my work-study program at ICP. I felt so connected to my students that it was so hard to let go. This was a challenging time to be an educator and I felt so grateful for how wonderful my students were.
Earlier this year my friend Anna at ICP asked me to talk about a piece in the anniversary show and I chose Justine Kurland’s. It is hard to hear any recording of myself because it does not entirely match how eloquent I think I am, but I did touch upon something important. Now that I am en educator I think about my education in a different way and it was nice to have an opportunity to talk about how formative it was to have Justine as a teacher. I saw Justine snap a pic of this picture at my opening and it brought me so much joy. She is, after all, the voice in my head that challenges me to be more adventurous as an artist.
I would also love to use this occasion to invite you to a talk happening at Baxter Street this week (Wednesday 22 at 6pm, 126 Baxter Street, NYC 10013). Kelly Long and I will be talking about the themes on my exhibition, Flowering Wound. Kelly curated the amazing show Trust Me at the Whitney Museum, it not only featured some of my favorite artists (Genesis Báez, Laura Aguilar, Muriel Hasbun, Moira Davey, Jenny Calivas, to only name a few), it also touched upon so many interesting themes that are near and dear to me. I’m beyond excited to have a conversation with her and you all of you to join us.
