29. A picture from last year
PLEASE NOTE THE TALK WITH GENESIS BÁEZ IS THIS SATURDAY, 1pm
ROLL 564 | FRAME 35
Martha, Los Angeles, May 2025.
One of the joys of taking film pictures is uncovering pictures when you look back at your contact sheets. Graciela Iturbide described it as there being two decisive moments: “One, when you take the photo; and two, when you discover it in the contact sheet”. Just the other day I did it, starting from the last picture I used in the book. I not only found pictures I had not considered, but I also realized that I took more worthwhile pictures last year than I had initially assumed.
This one picture was taken in a small bungalow we stayed at in Elysian Heights in Los Angeles. The light was very beautiful that summer afternoon last May, I had forgotten how inspired I was by it.
From the contact sheets I wanted to share these pictures of my dear friend Genesis Báez, since it is a good segue into a couple of events coming up that I wanted to talk to you about: one in New York this weekend, one in Portland the following, and one in Mexico next month.
ROLL 512
Genesis, New York, May 2024.
In 2022 I published La Luz También Viaja by Genesis Báez with Matarile Ediciones . The first time we ever talked I instantly was enthralled by her enthusiasm and the eloquent way she talked about her work, even while recovering from an illness! We worked on the zine for a handful of months and we became fast friends. I can’t stress enough how much my life has been enriched by this friendship. This is why I am so excited to invite everyone to a very special talk in between Genesis and me this SATURDAY 1pm at Printed Matter in Chelsea.
I am also going to be presenting my book in Mexico City at last! March 21 (first day of spring!) 6pm at La Americana in Hipódromo Condesa. I haven’t been to Mexico in two years so I am excited to travel and also to celebrate with my family and friends back home!
And finally, if you are in Portland (Oregon), I will be giving a talk and a small workshop as part of the Small Press & Art Book Fair at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. See you there!
